The Solidarity of Korean and Myanmar Civil Societies in Retrospect: From the Very First Beginning of 2000

Youngmi Yang

Korean civil society has been engaged with the democratic movement in Myanmar for a significant time period. This article, therefore, aims to review how Korean civil society supported the asylum application processes of Myanmar activists in 2000 and analyzes the characteristics and limitations of the solidarity movement of Korean and Myanmar civil societies during that time. This article suggests that the solidarity movement of civil society actors in the two countries has been lasted for a significant time period and expanded to multiple issue areas, unlike other cases that often temporarily mobilized for a single issue. Thus, by reflecting on the implications of the past, this article contributes to the current studies of the Myanmar crisis which is very likely to prolong the conflictual situation.
