Achievements and Challenges"

by Dahye KIm, Hyun Kyoung Kim and Je Seong Jeon

Abstract

The SEASK (Southeast Asian School in Korea) co-organized by Jeonbuk National University and Busan University of Foreign Studies started in the summer of 2019 and was held five times over three years. The two-week vacation camp was conducted as face-to-face classes every time during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to five Southeast Asian languages (Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai, Burmese and Khmer), Arabic and Turkish were also taught at the camp. About 300 students, including undergraduate and graduate students from 32 universities from all over the country, as well as scholars, activists, lawyers, and journalists, took the course. Many people have shown interest and support for the SEASK and are requesting a more detailed introduction. Now is the time to review the practices of the past three years. This paper is about the background, process, achievements and challenges of the SEASK. It was written by those who found the language camp together to celebrate the 3rd anniversary and prepare for the next 3 years.
