{NO. 31] 2024 Indonesian Election: The Rise of Authoritarian Politics and Political Dynasty

"2024 Indonesian Election: The Rise of Authoritarian Politics and Political Dynasty"

by Hyung-Jun KIM (Department of Cultural Anthropology, Kangwon National University)

Abstract

This paper summarizes the process and outcomes of the 2024 Indonesian election, which included the selection of the president and vice president, members of the national parliament, regional representatives, and local council members. It also explores the potential for changes in Indonesian democracy. A significant highlight of these elections was Prabowo Subianto’s landslide victory, supported by President Jokowi, alongside the PDI-P's ability to retain its status as the leading party despite a significant defeat in the presidential race. The election process conspicuously displayed the expansion of dynastic politics, centered around specific families, while identity politics seemed to have a minimal impact. The election of Prabowo as president, given his resources and determination to monopolize political power, is viewed as having the potential to disrupt the current political equilibrium and to bolster authoritarian tendencies.
