On December 2, the Department of Sports Science at Jeonbuk National University held a Self-Introduction Essay Workshop aimed at strengthening students’ career development and writing competencies. Rather than focusing solely on writing techniques, the workshop emphasized how philosophical self-reflection can be effectively integrated into personal statements.
The lecturer conveyed the message that “introducing yourself is not merely describing who you are, but engaging in a process of self-reflection.” Students were guided to look deeper into their values, experiences, and goals. The lecture also introduced methods for incorporating core elements such as questioning, interpretation, and the exploration of essence into their essays, supported by real examples.
During the workshop, students practiced asking fundamental questions such as:
“Who am I?”
“What does it mean to be a university student?”
“What meaning do my experiences hold?”
“What values do I pursue?”
This process helped participants craft more refined and coherent personal narratives.
Students who attended the workshop shared positive feedback, stating:
“I learned not just to list my experiences, but to explain why I made certain choices.”
“I realized that philosophical questioning makes a personal statement more persuasive.”
The Department of Sports Science will continue to provide a variety of workshops and programs to enhance students’ career competencies and support them in developing their own authentic stories.
