The Department of Japanese Studies was first established as the Department of Japanese Language and Literature in 1985, and then reorganized into the Department of Oriental Literature with the Department of Chinese and Chinese Literature in 1999, and then returned to the Department of Japanese Language and Literature in 2005. Since then, in 2016, the name of the department has been changed to the Department of Japanese Studies in the wake of participation in the Humanities Capacity Enhancement Project (CORE Project).
In 1992, a master's program in Japanese Language Education was established in the Graduate School of Education. In 1999, a master's program was launched in the General Graduate School, followed by the establishment of a doctoral program in 2002.
In addition, the Institute for Japanese and East Asian Studies serves as a specialized research institute, hosting a variety of programs each year, including workshops, special lectures, and academic conferences related to Japanese studies.
The Department of Japanese Studies currently has four full-time faculty members specializing in language, literature, and culture, along with one visiting professor from Japan.
