Since 1978 when the department of sociology firstly accepted its students as an independent program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of Jeonbuk National University, we have progressed along with the growth of the College of Social Sciences and the University for more than 40 years. As the sole department teaching sociology in the Jeonbuk region for the past four decades, we have assiduously continued to produce talented graduates who critically analyze contemporary Korean society and are able to propose an alternative imagination.
As a reflection of self-evaluations conducted twice in 1995 and 2005 respectively and in response to recent demands for more expertise in sociology, we have arranged for our students four specialized tracks: (1) quantitative research and social survey, (2) local society, (3) gender, and (4) multicultural society. Each track is designed not only to match up with relevant regular sociology courses, and but to correspond to various activities such as special lectures, student-led activities, field trip, and student conference. In addition, these four tracks aim to bring closer the relationship between the faculty and students.
Undergraduate students, graduate students, and professors in the department of sociology always endeavor to build an academic community in which one can learn and teach from another. In doing so, we do mature knowledge about society but also nurture people with intelligent muscle that makes social solidarity stronger.
