Our Department is...
The twenty-first century is the age of biological sciences.
It implies the meaning that biological sciences will be the most important key in clarify the various phenomena of life based on knowledge accumulated in any other natural sciences such as physics, chemistry, and mathematics until now.
This now, biological sciences have been prospered in accordance with DNA sequences is determined and is continue to grow as a powerful tool to research peculiarities of life.
To keep up with this forward-looking demand, the faculty of biological sciences consists of 20 distinguished faculty members, together with the curricular of the undergraduate that specializes two majors, biology and molecular biology and graduate programs supported by the Brain Korea 21 which is government funding for contribute for the state competitive power in the twenty-first century.
In addition, the faculty possess National Research Lab., as well as participates in research for industrial development of biofood materials and in project granted by Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy.
The faculty of biological sciences is authenticated as the excellent department by Korean Council for University Education in 1994.
As related institutes in Jeonbuk National University, there are Institute of Basic Science, Institute for Molecular Biology and Genetics, Institute for Biodiversity Research, Radiation Safety Center.
The graduate students belong to this organ and accomplish research actively.
What do I study...
Objects of biological study is diverse plants, animals, and microorganisms containing from lower organisms to higher organisms. According to the view of life phenomenon, biological study can be classified by genetics, embryology, physiology, immunology, evolution, behavior and it can be classified by molecular biology, cell biology, taxonomy, ecology and others according to research system.
Fields of biological study are more subdivisible and life phenomena is too complicated and thus it is very difficult to study of living organisms by using one field in biological sciences.
Therefore, biological study require learning all together of each biological knowledges organically.
Biological sciences in the twenty-first century, along with analyses of cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, and genetics, research fields of mutual relation between organisms and environment such as taxonomy, evolution, ecology and behavior will also go through an unprecendented expansion.
Molecular biology and bioinformatics will continue to grow in various fields.
