Objectives of Education
The Dept. of Fashion Design aims to foster specialists, who improve creative design abilities and contribute to development of the fashion industry based on basic theories on clothing and textiles.
① Fostering specialists who can engage in the fashion industry, by providing students with systematic teaching and training, including basic education on clothing and textiles, basic design education, and further education
② Contributing to the development of the academic field related to clothing and textiles
③ Contributing to the development of the local economy through Industry-University-Government cooperation
Introduction
Ⅰ. Mission & Objectives
The Department of Fashion Design aims to foster specialists, who can contribute to the development of fashion and related industry, by improving creative design abilities based on basic theories of fashion. The educational objectives are
1. to develop basic fundamentals for fashion specialists, by understanding fashion knowledge in various contexts, including society, culture, technologies, and other fields.
2. to cultivate practicality required in the fashion industry by using diversified approaches embracing theories and practical applications.
3. to foster flexibility and positiveness in communication by learning how to effectively convey creative ideas to others.
4. to nurture leadership meeting the needs of the times by understanding globalization in the fashion industry and improving problem-solving skills.
5. to contribute to academic progress in fashion and related fields and to the development of fashion industry as well as local economy through industry-university-government cooperation.
Ⅱ. History
The Department of Fashion Design (2014-present), formerly named the Department of Clothing and Textiles (1991-2013), is originated from the Department of Home Economics Education in the College of Education, but has become an independent department newly founded at the College of Human Ecology in December 1991, in order to place a high value on the academic originality of fashion and meet the needs of the times. In March 1992, initial 20 students were matriculated into the department. The department established a course of study for the teaching profession in order to foster fashion design teachers working for vocational high schools. In March 1993, the entrance quota of the department increased from 20 to 30, resulting in 30 students newly registered. In 1999, the department was re-organized into the Clothing and Textiles Major, a part of Division of Human Ecology, giving students an opportunity to choose a major in their sophomore year, but it has changed back to the former structure since 2009.
Moreover, the Department of Fashion Design provides graduate programs: Master's and Doctoral courses in the Clothing and Textiles Major, Department of Home Ecology (2005-present). In addition, another Master's course, the Interdisciplinary Studies in Latin America, Fashion, Trade and Commerce (2016-present), is offered through the collaboration with two departments, the Department of Commerce and Trade and the Department of Spanish, Central and South American Literature. Since the first 16 students graduated in February 1996, approximately 610 alumni have been majored in the Department of Fashion Design at Jeonbuk National University to be engaged in various specialized occupations in their major field.
Ⅲ. Education
Students majored in the Department of Fashion Design can study on fashion and clothing reflecting human lifestyles in the context of human ecology and gain professional knowledge about that. To nurture creative and progressive fashion specialists meeting the needs of the times, the Department of Fashion Design provides a multidisciplinary curriculum embracing various fields, such as Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Science of Arts. Accordingly, students can accumulate diverse theoretical knowledge and practical hand-on experiences across the all-around fashion and related fields.
First, students can have learning opportunities to develop their artistic sense and express their design inspirations through the classes of Textile Design, Fashion Illustration, and Design & Color, Fashion Design, Costume Aesthetics, History of Korean Costume, and History of Western Costume. Moreover, in the classes of Human Body & Clothing, Clothing Construction Design, Western Clothing Construction Practice and Korean Costume Construction, students can have opportunities to be involved in dress-making practices in order to understand the characteristics of human body shape and learn how to construct functional and active apparels. Furthermore, in the class of Draping Practice, students can study draping techniques in consideration of the characteristics of human body shape and learn how to embody creative design inspirations in their handiwork. Based on the abilities developed these basic classes, students can take the advanced classes of Origination Costume and Construction of Special Costume and participate in the annual graduation fashion show in their senior year.
Second, students can have opportunities to acquire more diverse abilities required in the recent fashion industry. Students can learn how to analyze consumer behaviors related to fashion consumption and suggest a business strategy based on the results in the classes of Social Psychology of Clothing, Fashion Marketing, Fashion Brand Management Workshop and Fashion Retailing Channels. Students can also learn how to create clothing patterns and design clothes by using a computer in the class of Computer-Aided Design & Practice. Furthermore, the classes of Apparel Production System, Fashion Merchandising, Work Experience, Apparel Design, Fashion Portfolio help students to gain practical knowledge and working experiences required in the fashion industry. The class of Global Fashion Business gives students learning opportunity to see a bigger picture in the globalized business environment, and the class of Fashion Venture leads students to develop their sense of creativity and challenge. These classes satisfy contemporary needs in the dynamic fashion industry.
Finally, the classes of Introduction to Fiber Science, Fabric Science and Art Dyeing & Weaving help students to gain basic knowledge about textiles and develop their potential powers. Aiming to nurture fashion specialists having a creative design sensibility, the Department of Fashion Design offers a well-balanced curriculum including both theory and practicum classes performed in Clothing Construction Lab, Costume Design Lab, Clothing Material Lab, and Computer-Aided Design Lab, in which cutting–edge audio-visual education systems are equipped.
Ⅳ. Highlights
The exhibition for graduation works had been held since May 1998, and it was expanded into the annual graduation fashion show, titled Jeonbuk National University Fashion Festival (2003-present).
Local residents including high school students in Jeollabuk-do as well as the members of Jeonbuk National University are invited in this festival. The Fashion Festival plays an important role in promoting the Department of Fashion Design and providing a fancy communication channel informing the latest fashion styles and other issues in the fashion field. Moreover, as one of the important events in Jeonbuk National University, the Fashion Festival contributes to the adoption of sound dress-codes in university campus.
