JEONBUK NATIONAL UNIVERSITY
Department of Environmental Engineering
“Environmental Engineers:
Doctors Who Heal the Earth”
The Department of Environmental Engineering at Jeonbuk National University traces its origins to the Department of Geodesy and Environmental Engineering established in 1978, and was reorganized into the Department of Environmental Engineering in 1981. Since then, it has produced over 1,600 graduates who have contributed as environmental engineers in Korea. The department has been dedicated to addressing environmental pollution issues and ensuring a sustainable and healthier living environment.
Environmental engineering is the discipline that preserves and restores our living foundation—planet Earth.. In this sense, all who study, research, and work in environmental-related industries are, in a broader meaning, “doctors who heal the Earth.” To fulfill this mission, the Department of Environmental Engineering focuses on a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of traditional areas such as water, air, waste, and soil/groundwater, while applying engineering knowledge to protect and sustain the global environment.
Furthermore, the department continuously improves its curriculum and educational quality to respond to contemporary challenges such as climate change, renewable energy, resource circulation, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, ESG, and carbon neutrality. As a result of these efforts, the department was selected as the top-ranked university in environmental engineering in the 2018 University Evaluation from the Perspective of Industry. It has also implemented the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK) program since 2013, producing its first accredited graduates in 2017, and continues to operate the program successfully.
In research, the department has received awards at national and international conferences every year. It has conducted specialized graduate programs such as the Climate Change Specialized Graduate School and Waste-to-Energy Graduate Program. Since 2020, it has been operating the BK21 FOUR Glocal Resource Circulation and Environmental Education & Research Group, leading education and research to solve pressing environmental challenges. The Department of Environmental Engineering at Jeonbuk National University remains committed to protecting not only our present but also future generations in this era of global climate crisis.
