Dr.Kannan's main research interest and efforts focus on the bioremediation of heavy metal contaminated environments. The research is based on the fact that microorganisms and plants are the key catalysts for reduction/sequestration of metals from contaminated environment. To better design, improe and optimize the bioremediation process in long run, he is doing process based researches with emphases on microbial diversity in contaminated environment and interactions of microorganisms with the plants.

Dr.Kannan have extensively studied the bacterial diversity in metal contaminated brackish environments as well as in abandoned mines, and characterized the microorganisms for metal sequestration/reduction. In addition, he has successfully isolated several metal resistant bacterial with ACC deaminase activity, an enzyme which induces the plant growth under stress conditions by reducing the ethylene level in plants. To select the potential isolates in bioremediation process, use of molecular tools is essential. So he has extensively located and characterized several metal reducing/sequestration and plant growth promoting genes by using modem molecular biological tools.
