Achievements and Challenges of Education on Southeast Asia in the Division of International and Area Studies (DIAS), Pukyong National University

Bubmo JUNG (Pukyong National University)

As part of the government’s CK (University for Creative Korea) project and CORE (Initiative for COllege of humanities’ Research and Education) project, the Division of International and Area Studies (DIAS) at Pukyong National University (PKNU) restructured its curriculum in 2015. This effort complemented the division’s educational strategy of emphasizing regional studies and local languages in addition to subject-matter expertise. To achieve this, the Division of International and Area Studies hired numerous full-time Southeast Asian specialists and established a foundation for Southeast Asian studies education, including the inclusion of Vietnamese as a required foreign language course. This has resulted in increased undergraduate interest in Southeast Asia, and an increasing number of graduate students writing theses on the region in the newly established Graduate School of Global Area Studies. Furthermore, the Division of International and Area Studies has participated in the AIMS (ASEAN International Mobility for Students) program, which fosters student exchanges with universities in Southeast Asia, sending or inviting students to universities in Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. This human exchange has led to increased demand for development cooperation-related internships and job/startup opportunities in Southeast Asia, and has resulted in students pursuing graduate studies on Southeast Asia or working as practitioners in national projects related to Southeast Asia. However, the lack of a separate Southeast Asia-related major at undergraduate or graduate level and the lack of promising career paths related to the region remain limitations.
