Public Diplomacy 2.0 for Singapore: Celebrating 50 Years of Korea-Singapore Ties

Jin-wook HONG (Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Singapore)

Marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Singapore in 2025, this article traces the evolution of their bilateral ties and explores strategic pathways for future cooperation. Over the past five decades, the two countries have expanded collaboration in a wide range of sectors, including politics, security, economy, culture, and education, while embracing multilateralism, a rules-based international order, and open trade. Our partnership has further advanced into emerging domains such as advanced technology, supply chain resilience, digital transformation, and sustainable development. To ensure the sustainable advancement of the strategic partnership between our two nations, intergovernmental cooperation is indispensable ; however, securing firm public support in both countries for the bilateral relationship is of even greater significance. Achieving this requires the sustained, consistent, and systematic implementation of public diplomacy. According to the perception surveys jointly conducted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Singapore and local media in 2024, and a public opinion survey by ISEAS, Korea enjoys high cultural favorability in Singapore and Southeast Asia, while perceptions of Korea as a reliable strategic cooperation partner remain insufficient. Continuing to actively utilize the K-wave, we should not remain merely at the level of consuming cultural products, but should expand the scope of our public diplomacy into other diverse area. We should also promote a “Team Korea” approach in which the Korean government, Korean companies, and overseas Koreans work together in an organic and coordinated manner. By engaging mainstream mass media and key digital influencers as policy stakeholders and partners, Korea can strengthen its strategic credibility and solidify its position as one of Singapore’s most trusted partners.
