Jeonbuk National University announced on the 24th that Ph.D. candidate Su-ji Cho (advisor: Professor Sang-hyun Kim) from the Department of Sports Science received the Jeollabuk-do Governor's Commendation in recognition of her contributions to regional sports development.This commendation is awarded to individuals who have contributed to revitalizing community sports and promoting the health of provincial residents based on their expertise in the field of physical education and exercise. Dr. Cho received high praise for her active participation in field-based physical activities and educational programs, leveraging her expertise in exercise prescription and sports science. Her efforts in operating physical education and exercise programs for local residents, providing expert guidance, and practicing the public nature and sustainability of physical education were cited as key reasons for the award. These activities were also evaluated as aligning with Jeollabuk-do Province's policy direction of Creating a Sports Environment for Innovation and Growth Together. Ph.D. candidate Cho Soo-ji stated, I believe this commendation is less about individual achievement and more the result of consistent efforts in the field alongside my advisor, Professor Kim Sang-hyun, adding, I will strive even harder to connect sports science research with practical fieldwork to contribute to the development of the local community and sports. Meanwhile, Jeonbuk National University's Department of Sports Science is establishing itself as a department that grows alongside the local community through education and research that bridges theory and practice. The special lecture The Future of Sports Science Majors: Beyond Undergraduates to Irreplaceable Experts focused on what sports science majors must prepare to gain competitiveness in the career market.It provided concrete methods for building irreplaceable expertise based on major knowledge, including data interpretation, field application skills, communication capabilities, and qualification/career planning. Through diverse career case studies, it shared the major's expansion potential and practical growth strategies.It was a meaningful session helping students clearly identify their strengths and design differentiated career paths based on their major.

The Sports Event Preparation and Operations special lecture covered the entire process of how actual sports events proceed, from the planning stage through on-site operations to post-event cleanup.It examined essential practical elements such as setting event objectives, scheduling, budgeting, staffing, managing partner organizations and participants, promotional strategies, and safety/risk management through case studies, sharing operational know-how immediately applicable in the field.This provided students with an opportunity to understand the structure of sports event management and develop systematic preparation and on-site response capabilities.

The Department of Sports Science at Jeonbuk National University held a second semester subcommittee briefing to review activities for the 2025 academic year's second semester and strengthen communication and cooperation among department members.This briefing session featured participation from six subcommittees Badminton, Rehabilitation, Basketball, Soccer, Swimming, and Weight Training which shared the progress of their activities over the past semester and presented their operational plans and improvement directions for the remainder of the semester.Following each division's presentation, exchange time was arranged for each division using the department's official meal allowance. This aimed to enhance camaraderie and a sense of belonging among students and facilitate smoother communication. This approach is fostering not only the continuity and participation rate of division activities but also more active academic and practical collaboration.This second semester briefing session facilitated the sharing of operational achievements and areas for improvement across each division. It is anticipated that more systematic and professional division activities will continue throughout the remaining period.The Department of Sports Science at Jeonbuk National University will continue to actively support student-led initiatives, striving to create an educational environment that fosters academic and practical growth alongside personal development.

The Department of Sports Science at Jeonbuk National University officially launched the 'Jeonbuk National University Department of Sports Science Alumni Association' on November 27 to seek development of the department through strong solidarity among alumni. The department held an official launch ceremony at a restaurant in downtown Jeonju at 6:00 PM that day, attended by department head Kim Sang-hyun, professors, current students, and alumni. At the launching ceremony, alumnus Lee Byeong-yeong (class of 2000) was elected as the first president of the alumni association, and plans were shared to grow the association into a platform for the local community and industry to grow together through various projects such as regular alumni exchange events and mentoring for current students. In particular, a memorial service was held to honor the late Professor Emeritus Kim Moo-young, who greatly contributed to the development of the Department of Sports Science at Jeonbuk National University, leaving attendees deeply moved. In addition, dinners and social gatherings continued, leading to active exchanges between seniors, juniors, and faculty. Lee Byeong-yeong, the first president of the alumni association, said, The launch of the alumni association is a meaningful first step toward preparing the Department of Sports Science to make a greater leap forward as a single community, and emphasized, We will actively pursue various activities to develop the department, nurture juniors, and contribute to the local sports industry.

Professor Lee Seom-gyun's research team from the Department of Sports Science at Jeonbuk National University recently won the second prize in the Young Investigator Award at the 2025 World Congress on Kinesiology and Sport Science held at the Jeju International Convention Center. Professor Lee presented research findings titled From Human Calls to Automation alongside professors from Myongji University and Quinnipiac University in the US. This study analyzed, using deep learning-based machine learning techniques, the changes the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) introduced to the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) had on players' actual game performance. In his presentation, Professor Lee explained, We focused on identifying, based on data, the actual impact the ABS system had on the game strategies and performance of pitchers and batters, adding, The patterns of change compared to the existing umpire judgment system will serve as important reference material for future improvements to professional sports regulations. He further emphasized, It was meaningful to share and discuss research findings with leading scholars worldwide, and receiving this award added to the great sense of accomplishment. Moving forward, we will meticulously analyze how newly introduced regulations and technologies in the professional sports industry impact performance and fan experience, further advancing AI and big data-based research to provide insightful analysis.

[Department of Sports Science] 2025 Big Data Research Camp Successfully Concluded (Nov. 20 21)The Department of Sports Science at Jeonbuk National University held the 2025 Sports Big Data Research Camp from Thursday, November 20 to Friday, November 21. This two-day, one-night event took place at the Mo-hang Haenaru Family Hotel in Buan and brought together professors, undergraduate students, and graduate students.This camp aimed to help participants understand data utilized across the sports industry and experience diverse analytical approaches rarely encountered at the undergraduate level.During the camp,student presentations and group discussions focused on topics including:* Structure and application cases of athlete training big data* Data collection and analysis processes in sports rehabilitation* Selection of key indicators for performance prediction models* Interpretation of biometric signal data from sports wearables* Big data trends and future prospects in the sports industryStudents shared materials on their areas of interest, exchanged diverse perspectives, and explored ideas applicable to actual research alongside professors.Additionally, the relaxed atmosphere facilitated meaningful interactions between professors and students, where academic and career advice was exchanged, strengthening communication among department members.The Department of Sports Science plans to continue operating programs that simultaneously enhance students' practical skills and research capabilities.

Dr. Ryu Min-ah, a researcher in the Department of Sports Science, received the Excellence Award in the AR Paper Competition at the 63rd Korean Society of Physical Education Academic Conference Commemorating the 106th National Sports Festival . Her paper, titled Two Perspectives on AR Smart Climbing: Expert and Participant Views, was honored.This academic conference, held at Pusan National University (10.16 Memorial Hall, Humanities Building) from October 17 to 18 under the theme Convergence and Future Innovation in Sports Science, was a large-scale event attended by sports science researchers nationwide. Following the opening ceremony, keynote lectures, and academic presentations on the first day, the awards ceremony for outstanding doctoral dissertations and the AR paper competition took place.Dr. Ryu received the Excellence Award alongside Han Tae-gyu, a doctoral candidate at Yonsei University, and Dr. Do Kyung-min of Kyung Hee University, in recognition of the academic contribution of their research on the acceptance of sports climbing utilizing augmented reality (AR) technology.The award-winning paper analyzed the adoption factors of AR smart climbing from the perspectives of experts and participants. It empirically clarified the relationship between technological utility and social impact through Delphi, AHP, and IPA analyses.It received high praise for proposing a bottom-up planning strategy based on participant experience, focusing particularly on the factors of peer influence and autonomy, thereby suggesting a direction for the development of AR sports content.Dr. Ryu Min-ah stated, The convergence of AR and sports science is a core research area connecting future-oriented education and participatory sports industries, adding, This award will serve as an opportunity to further expand research on participant-centered smart sports content development.
