Fibers are mainly used as materials for fabrics, however, the application of fibers are broadened to the industrial areas for more value-added products. Our laboratory investigates functional fibers to applicate in the industrial areas by blen- ding various polymers. One area includes producing synthetic fibers for artificial hair by melt spinning method or solution spinning method. Flame retardant property is a prerequisite for the artificial hair to protect skin from burning.
Polyvinylchloride is used as the polymer for the artificial hair because of the flame retardancy of the chlorine in the molecular structure. In our laboratory, other polymers such as polyester and nylon are blended with flame retardant p olymers by compounding process to endow flame retardancy. Modacryl or polyvinyl alcohol fibers are produced by solution spinning method for the multi-functional artificial hairs.
