The major macromolecular of all living creatures, both animal and plant, are biologically active polymers with very complicated structures. The controlled structure of polymer provides optimal organization and functionality to them. Smart materials are materials that can sense external stimuli such as stress, moisture, pH, and electric or magnetic fields and respond to changes in their surroundings. For that reason they are often also called intelligent materials. A new smart materials introduce a new paradigm. For example, we could develop portable digital device that is able to not only sense our body conditions but also react and perform healing functions, such as delivering anti-cancer medicine and regenerating damaged tissue, as well as the smart textile that changes colors and patterns depending on the light or the temperature. The aim of our lab is to understand the function and the parts of living creatures and subsequently can design and synthesize a novel smart nanostructured materials based on our experience and knowledge through infinitive imagination and observation. Also we are exploring their applications including fiber, plastics, film, and hydrogel, etc.
