Eligibility to apply for the evaluation
Master’s degree
- Completion of a mater’s course자
- A current student who earned credits required to complete a degree at the end of the 1st semester of the 2019 school year (Aug. 2019) [Credits required to complete the degree = Major courses (24 credits) + Prerequisite courses ( credits)]
- A student who has paid a tuition fee every semester during the years required for completing a course
- A student who has passed the foreign language and comprehensive exams
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher in a master’s program
- A student who has completed a graduate thesis for evaluation and received a recommendation by a research advisor
- A person who completed a master’s program and it has been less than 6 years since then
※ A period of military service is not counted for those who served in the military after completing a master’s program.
※ A student who completed a master’s program 6 or more years ago should re-apply for foreign language and comprehensive exams, and the exam results will be valid for 6 years from the date of passing the exams again.
Doctoral degree (based on research performance recognition standards)
- Completion of a doctoral program (including an interdisciplinary program)
- A student who has paid a tuition fee every semester during the years required for completing a course
- A student who has passed the foreign language exam, the second foreign language exam (if applicable) exam and the comprehensive exam
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher in a doctoral program
- A student who has his/her articles published in academic journals (at least 200%) after staring the doctoral program
- A student who has completed a graduate thesis for evaluation and received a recommendation by your research advisor
- A person who completed a master’s program and it has been less than 8 years since then
※ A period of military service is not counted for those who served in the military after completing a doctoral program.
※ A student who completed a doctoral program 8 or more years ago should re-apply for foreign language and comprehensive exams, and the exam results will be valid for 8 years from the date of passing the exams again.

※ “Other journals” means journals released at 4-year colleges or higher-level institutions (including research institutes).
※ An article, published in a collection of articles or as part of an academic conference, will be excluded.
※ The Department of Medicine and the Department of Medical Science have their own guidelines about research performance recognition standards. (For the guidelines, applicants of these departments must contact the Administration Office of the College of Medicine at 270-3596.)
A student who has been approved to postpone the evaluation of his/her master’s or doctoral thesis by 6 months shall have his/her thesis evaluated during this period without applying for thesis evaluation and paying a thesis evaluation fee, and shall submit just a result report.
Required documents to apply for the evaluation
Documents to be submitted to the Office of Student and Academic Affairs, JBNU Graduate School: Required document should be uploaded in PDF format to OASIS and the original copies should be submitted to the Office of Student and Academic Affairs, the Graduate School.

- Confirmation of Bank Accounts of Persons Recommended as Members of the Doctoral Thesis Evaluation Committee ※ Bank account numbers of the University’s professors shall not be written.
- Confirmation of Research Ethics Compliance in Preparing the Graduate Thesis
- Certificate of Completing the Research Ethics Course
- students admitted to the Graduate School in 2015 and later - Confirmation of a Released Journal Article (Doctoral Thesis) and an offprint of the article (applicable only to doctoral theses) (1 copy)※ If the publication has been postponed after the release of the article, please attach a Confirmation of a Published Journal Article.
- : A student who submitted a Confirmation of a Published Journal Article should submit the published article to the Office of Student and Academic Affairs, JBNU Graduate School by Nov. 30, 2019.※ If the student submits a printed out copy (copied copy) of the article for an unavoidable reason, he/she should make sure to get his/her research advisor’s seal of “certified true copy.”
- [Applicants and evaluation committee members] Consent to Collection and Use of Personal Information (1 copy for each person)
- Research Advisor’s (Guidance Committee Member’s) Consent to Renounce Evaluation : Submit the form when your research advisor or guidance committee member cannot evaluate your paper.
- Thesis evaluation fee remittance receipt: Master’s thesis (KRW 100,000), doctoral thesis (KRW 300,000)Attach a certificate of remittance, which was made through deposit without a bankbook or online banking in the student’s name.

Evaluation committee members
Eligibility to serve as an evaluation committee member
Master’s programs
- The University’s associate professor or professor
- An assistant professor holding a master’s or higher degree or a professor with a higher academic rank
- An emeritus professor or an external member holding a doctoral degree if there are not enough regular faculty members of the University
※ A research advisor may not be the chief or vice-chief of the evaluation committee but may serve as only a member of the committee.

Number of the evaluation committee members
Master’s thesis-3 members, Doctoral thesis-5 members
Maximum number of theses per evaluation committee member
In principle, a member may evaluate up to three theses. But if there are not enough evaluation committee members, the theses evaluated by a research advisor or a guidance committee member will not be counted.
Appointment of evaluation committee members
The department recommends 3 professors with a master’s degree and 5 professors with a doctoral degree, and the dean appoints them as evaluation committee members.
Graduate thesis evaluation
Master’s degree
- Evaluation session: At least 2 sessions of reading (including 1 session of open presentation)
- Passing criterion: Consent by at least two thirds of the evaluation committee member, a score of 80 or higher out of 100
Doctoral degree
- Evaluation session: At least 3 sessions of reading (including 1 session of open presentation)
- Passing criterion: Consent by at least four fifths of the evaluation committee member, a score of 80 or higher out of 100

Reporting due date: Dec. 20, 2019

: Applies to an applicant whose thesis title in the Evaluation Results Report is different from the thesis title given when he/she applied for the evaluation
