The Institute of Biodiversity Research was established in 1995 to facilitate our understanding about biological diversity and its conservation through studying the composition, structure, and function of biota at genetics, species and ecosystem levels. The main activities of the institute cover the following fields:
(1) Systematics and evolution of endemic, endangered, keystone, and vulnerable organism in Korea and Asia,
(2) Inventorying ecosystems and monitoring habitat change,
(3) Study of composition, structure, and interaction of soil community and its function in soil development,
(4) Conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of biodiversity related to economic and social factors, and
(5) Environmental assessments to determine potential impacts of developments on ecosystem, species, and genetic resources.
