The Semiconductor Physics Research Center(SPRC) was started in 1990 as one of the 13 research centers of excellence designated by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation. The SPRC aims to become a leading group playing at the forefront of research and teaching of semiconductor science and technology through its programs of international cooperation, industry-university collaboration, and interdisciplinary graduate-undergraduate education. The SPRC performs plural research activities to be involved in production as an industry incubator or a venture company in a way to boosting the local semiconductor industry.
There are six of main research categories:
(1) light emission and detection devices such as LEDs and LDs,
(2) electrical and optical properties of semiconductors,
(3) quantum structures and nanostructure physics,
(4) high temperature and high power devices and integrated circuits,
(5) fabrication of semiconductor nanostructures and their applications, and
(6) new materials and new functional devices for IT technology. Based on the fundamental research of semiconductors, the SPRC pursues to strengthen the capability and creativity in developing future technologies by providing well-educated experts.
Meanwhile the SPRC has been operating the Semiconductor Process Technology Research Center(SPTRC) which was constructed through a national project for Semiconductor Infra-structure Innovation. The SPTRC is organized to provide its scientific and engineering services to enhance education programs, R&Ds, and technology transfer activities.
Most of facilities were equipped in the SPTRC focusing on compound semiconductor LED/LDs, and optoelectronic devices, processes, measurements, and analysis technology. The SPTRC offers an annual program for education, ECoS (Expert Courses of Semiconductors), to fulfill the industrial need on much more qualified human resources.
