Between ‘Reset’ and ‘Coalition’: Managed Democracy in Thailand Since 2006

Hongkoo Kim

(Busan University of Foreign Studies)

This article examines the transformation of Thai politics over nearly two decades since the 2006 military coup from a long-term structural perspective. Rather than assessing the success or failure of particular governments or political parties, the analysis focuses on why elections, coups, party dissolutions, prime ministerial removals, and coalition formations have repeatedly occurred, and how these events have been connected and functioned as a coherent political mechanism. The article conceptualizes the core structure of post-2006 Thai politics as a recurrent pattern in which non-elected institutions-most notably the military, the judiciary, and the monarchy-intervene to “reset” the political order whenever electorally empowered governments are perceived to threaten the existing order. Such resets have evolved beyond overt military coups to include increasingly institutionalized mechanisms, such as party dissolutions, constitutional court rulings, and the design of senatorial powers.

At the same time, the article emphasizes that Thai politics has not remained in a state of simple stagnation. The normalization of coalition governments, the increasing multipolarity of political alignments, and the persistent re-emergence of reformist forces are analyzed as gradual yet significant processes of change. Taken together, these dynamics indicate that Thai politics has entered a phase of “managed change,” in which recurrent systemic resets coexist with incremental institutional adjustment.

The article concludes by offering an analytical framework for assessing the trajectory of Thai politics ahead of the 2026 general election.
