From the Streets of Myanmar to a University in South Korea: A Myanmar Student’s Journey after 2021 Coup

So-Yeon KIM

(International Student from Myanmar, Jeonbuk National University)

This paper recounts the journey of a student who took to the streets of Myanmar calling for democracy in 2021, the year of the military coup, and eventually came to pursue higher education in South Korea. Until the outbreak of the coup, I was an ordinary undergraduate student. I do not belong to the generation that directly experienced decades of military rule in Myanmar. Nevertheless, even in my childhood, I vividly recall a series of events that intermittently cast an unusual sense of tension over everyday life. These include the Saffron Revolution, the Cyclone Nargis disaster that claimed countless lives, and the social

and political transformations that followed the onset of political and economic reforms in Myanmar. This paper draws on these memories and experiences as its backdrop.

The 2021 military coup drastically transformed my life as an ordinary university student.

Despite my parents’ objections—shaped by their own experiences of living under a harsh military regime—I took to the streets and joined other citizens chanting “NO MILITARY DICTATORSHIP” and “DEMOCRACY”. Among these moments, the protest held in front of the South Korean Embassy became an important turning point that eventually led me to come to South Korea and begin a new chapter of my life. Through this paper, I reflect on the contingencies and connections that opened this path to me, as well as on what I have learned through this new life and what I aspire to pursue in the future. Written on the 5th anniversary of the coup, this paper aims to remind readers that the people of Myanmar continue to suffer under military rule even five years on, while also continuing to resist, and to encourage ongoing attention and solidarity.
