The origin of Jeonbuk National University School of Dentistry (JBNUSD) traces back to October 1978 when the pre-medical course for dentistry was organized under the Collage of Liberal Arts and Sciences being a six-year system. The first students of the pre-medical course for dentistry were admitted in March 1979 and 32 students graduated in February 1985.
Affiliated to Jeonbuk National University Medical Center, the Dental Hospital opened in 1979 with 8 major clinical departments: Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Pediatric Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Conservative Dentistry, and Prosthodontics. The hospital launched its clinical training programs and dental services for the community. In addition to the eight clinical departments, there are four specialized centers at present.
In June 1983, the Dental Research Institute was founded with many research equipments and published the first journal of Jeonbuk National University Dental Research.
In 1988, The Dental Library was first established and upgraded to a branch library of the Jeonbuk National University Library in 2007. In October 1996, the school moved from the old building in Kyungwon-dong to the present new building at the main campus in Keumam-dong. Shortly after this in the same month, the hospital also moved to the same area. With this momentum, the college made great strides in both its facilities and organization.
October 1999 marked the year of the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the School of Dentistry. Celebrations took place with the Alumni Home Coming Day as well as the holding of special seminars, festivals and events of all kinds. In March 2005, the 3-story YangYiJae building (the JBNUSD building), was completed and the Professional Graduate School of Dental Sciences was launched by adopting the 4+4 program. In 2010, we also hosted the Jeollabuk-do Disabled Dental Care Center in the dental hospital. In the same year, we decided to switch from the professional Graduate School of Dental Science system(4 + 4 program) to the previous dental school system (2 + 4 program), and in 2015 we carried out a selection of students for predentistry course, again.
In 2015, our school has been accredited by the Korean Institute of Dental Education and Evaluation for 5 years, and the second dental hospital building has been constructed to expand clinical practice areas for students. In April 2017, the Memorandum of Understanding between the local National Dental Universities. An experimental animal room has been established at the School of Dentistry Building 3, which was acquired by the College of Veterinary Medicine. The 'Center for Clinical Hands-on Practice' for improving dental students clinical skills and to prepare practical examination for the dentist is also under construction.
