Introduction
ivil engineering can be defined as a study that provides knowledge and information required in planning, investigating, designing, constructing, and maintaining traffic facilities, such as roads, railroads, ports, and airports, which are the main infra facilities that support production activities of corporations and enhance convenience of public citizens, public utility facilities, such as energy, communication, water and sewage, wastewater treatment, terminal disposal plant of sewage, garbage incineration and disposal, and gas supply network, as well as water resource facilities, such as dam, waterway, and canal.
When observing the development trend of industries related with civil engineering, it can be known that whereas the demand for civil facilities has rapidly increased with the continuous economic growth of Korea, main civil facilities remain insufficient due to inadequate supply, despite continuous efforts of the government to expand facilities. Qualitative/quantitative demand for civil facilities is expected to largely increase in the future due to the continuous expansion of economic size, increase in trade quantity, and enhanced national income standard. The expansion and efficient operation of civil engineering facilities are recognized as absolute requirements for the Korean economy to strengthen its national competitiveness in this era of global competition, Increased demand for related technical manpower is requested along with improved quality of education for related majors. To meet the demands for enhanced quality of university education regarding industries related with civil engineering, the present dynamics-focused civil engineering curriculum must be converted to consumer-oriented field education and changed into a research system to promote improved competitiveness of related industries.
Furthermore, civil facilities act as an artery for national life and economy and serve as the lifeline for a large-scale community. As civil facilities are designed and constructed with the purpose of enhancing human lives, its function for achieving safe and comfortable usage must be maintained after completion.
However, most civil facilities present declined performance or damage of components due to various factors, such as its surrounding environment or repetitive loading continuously conducted during its period of use on nature, a factor that presents high uncertainty. The severity of the effect caused on society in case civil facilities fail to maintain its role has already been observed in past incidents, such as the collapse of Sungsoo Grand Bridge or Sampoong Department Store. These accidents not only generate tremendous economic loss but also exert enormous mental shock to members of society. Thus, this department aims to develop technology and foster talents for achieving appropriate construction and maintenance of civil facilities safely from various risk factors, such as paying insufficient attention to the power of nature in designing facilities, unskilled design, faulty construction, insufficient maintenance, and deterioration of facilities. As stated in the following priority fostering strategy, the current curriculum and research system will be re-organized to ultimately construct a Chonbuk civil engineering team that can advance globally with the region.
