The department of mineral resources and energy engineering is the very area which becomes the base of all industries so it researches about entire processes of explore, development and treatment on valuable mineral resources underground and seas as well as explore, development and utilization of new energy resources. Mainly, it is constructed with six application areas. First, it researches the land type investigation about installing major underground structures, design, construction as well as safety evaluation based on basic knowledge related to the underground development. Second, it researches and performs new material development and recycling technology development based on mineral processing technology. Third, it performs the research about measurement on pollution level of the land and water, evaluation on environmental effect based on the geochemistry explore engineering. Fourth, it performs the research about micro-vibration control bursting technology and building bursting-destruction at the construction sites such as roads and tunnels by using dynamites. Fifth, it uses physical explore to perform the research such as the safety evaluation of the structure, development of water as well as evaluation on pollution level of underground. Lastly, it uses solar, geothermal, and marine energy to perform the research about development as well as application of alternative energy.

The mineral resources and energy engineering is the study area that researches hydrogen, fuel battery, solar energy that can replace fossil energy and are focused as future environmental-friendly energy as well as the technology development that can maximize development net value and utility efficiency of mineral and energy resources for the continuous industrial development and stable life style. Particularly, it is expected that more than 100 people per year are to be employed at the government companies after 2005 due to international issues of alternative as well as overseas resources development by the lack of mineral energy problem. The strength of my department has the high scarcity value as there are not many departments in Korea that professionally lecture and research the mineral resources and energy issues. Also, it operates professional curriculum courses from energy resource to new renewable energy, and there are numerous alumni who are actively working in energy resource area. As a weakness, there is very low teaching staff security and there is also the difficulty of securing expensive equipments due to uneven development by the university investment and support because of focusing on popular departments. The main direction to the development plan of the department of mineral resources and energy engineering is distinguished to renew the major curriculum and course to raise global person with good engineering knowledge and management mind, secure professional teaching staff, maintain employment rate for graduates, and achieve high research performance.
